The prominent Dutch clarinetist Fie Schouten is a highly sought-after soloist and performs worldwide with a colorful array of ensembles and fellow musicians.

Schouten has specialized in contemporary and improvised music, with a preference for low clarinets. She has premiered more than 100 compositions written especially for her, and has worked with, among others, Ensemble MusikFabrik Cologne, Parma FrontiereJazzOrchestra, and improvisers such as pianist Guus Janssen, drummer Sofia Borges, and cellist Vincent Courtois. In duo with cellist Katharina Gross, she focuses on contemporary, international repertoire. Since starting as a duo in 2022, they have performed in the Netherlands, France, Austria, Germany, Portugal, Turkey, Romania, and Trondheim.

Schouten has released twelve CDs to date and may rightly be called a specialist in the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen.
She is co-founder and artistic director (with Tobias Klein) of the Basklarinet Festijn. She is also the initiator and co-curator (with Aspasia Nasopoulou) of the concert series Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam, hosted by the Plein Theater Amsterdam.

Schouten is artistic director of Stichting To be Sung, founded in 2006. In 2019 she received the 1st Nieuw Geneco Fair Practice Composition Commission Award for her influence on the Dutch music world and her commitment to fair practice in the arts.

She has also been affiliated with the Prins Claus Conservatoire Groningen since 2013. She is coordinator of international relations and works as a teacher for the Jazz and Classical departments. She herself studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory, with bass clarinetist Harry Sparnaay as her principal teacher.
