The Curator

In 2014, Schouten co-founded the Basklarinet Festijn with Tobias Klein, initially to celebrate Harry Sparnaay’s 70th birthday. The biennial festival (2014, 2016, 2018, 2020-2022, 2025) celebrates and expands the bass clarinet repertoire through contemporary composed and improvised music, featuring concerts, workshops, and commissions. As director of the non-profit Stichting To be Sung, she has created a gathering place where her curiosity about what the instrument can do becomes a collective exploration.

Since 2019, she co-curates Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam with composer Aspasia Nasopoulou, a concert series at the Plein Theater favoring experimentation and innovation and featuring new works by young and leading composers. The series creates space for the unexpected encounters and fresh perspectives Schouten values, with a mission that emphasizes not just performance but education and knowledge exchange.

She has served as jury member for the Tera de Marez Oyens composition prize at Gaudeamus Muziekweek (2018, 2024) and the Danish Jazz Award (2025). From 2016-2019, she was an advisor at the Amsterdam Art Council (AFK), contributing to cultural policy in her home city.
