The Educator

Since 2013, Fie Schouten has served as professor at the Prince Claus Conservatoire in Groningen, teaching in both Classical and Jazz Departments. Her teaching focuses on contemporary music and the bass clarinet as an instrument of endless innovation, bringing the same curiosity to the classroom that drives her artistic practice.

Schouten teaches bass clarinet (Bachelor | Master), clarinet, contemporary performance practices, methodology, and chamber music. She is leading together with Tatiana Koleva (percussionist) the Cross Genre Ensemble for students from the Classical, Jazz and Composition & Media Departments. She is creating the unexpected encounters she values so highly. Her approach reflects Sparnaay’s influence; his endorsement speaks volumes: “She is a great player, open minded, always forward-looking, one of my former students I’m very proud of.

Her inquisitiveness becomes a teaching method: instead of having all answers, she models asking questions, exploring together, and remaining genuinely excited about what hasn’t been discovered yet. “I feel it’s a necessity to keep developing, as a musician and as a human being,” she says, a philosophy she brings to all aspects of her teaching.

During a few years she has coordinated the Sustainable Performance program. The program reflects her holistic understanding that musicians must care for their entire selves.

Guest professorships and masterclasses have taken her to conservatories in Vienna, Tallinn, Istanbul, Porto, Split, Provo, Chicago, Jerusalem, and Rotterdam. She has also given lecture-recitals throughout the Netherlands, making contemporary music accessible to broader audiences.

As of May 2026 Fie Schouten is Coordinator International Relations for the Prince Claus Conservatoire Groningen

Vision on teaching

The first thing I’ll ask you is: what do you want to play and learn?
This is not because I don’t have ideas, but I am not interested in copies of myself. I want to guide you in your personal journey as a professional artist. Curiosity, stubbornness and wonder are important and can also be developed.

The students of my former professor on bass clarinet Harry Sparnaay (1944-2017) were very different players and with a large variety of taste. The only thing we all had to do was to practice a lot and with joy. We also learned to not be our competitors, but eachothers companions. This collective feeling and respect to the direct colleagues I want to preserve and continue.
