Free Space

New project about space, so painfully actual.
On the first of July at the Bimhuis I’ll record a new album titled Free Space (#relativepitchrecords) with myself on clarinets, dear friend artists cellist Vincent Courtois, drummer Sofia Borges and actor Pierre Baux.
The (improvised) music is inspired (and structured) by the iconic book of Georges Perec from 1974 titled Espèces d’espaces (Spieces of spaces; Träume von Räumen; Ruimten Rondom).
The narrative line in the book draws from a blank paper to the space.. it is philosophical and with humor.
Jan Nieuwenhuis wrote a reflection connected to music:
Music, too, generally needs a ‘vacuum’ to move. For example, a musician blows air through a reed into a wooden tube. At the end of the tube, the music flows into space. The music breaks the silence and can feel like an intrusion because it changes the space. It demands openness and, as such, is an invitation. Perhaps even more than music fills space, it plays with emptiness. Listening is anchored in a labyrinth from which we connect with the outside world. Being in the world is a negotiation with space, a way of entering it and sharing it with others, a constant search for balance.”
